Smoke-Free Kitchens, Stronger Communities: What Good Cookstove Carbon Finance Looks Like
August 7, 2026
For millions of rural households, cooking still means burning firewood over traditional open fires. In the tribal highlands of Andhra Pradesh's Paderu Division, where access to LPG and other clean fuels is virtually non-existent, firewood remains the only viable cooking fuel. The costs extend well beyond carbon emissions; indoor air pollution, long hours spent collecting fuelwood, increasing pressure on local forest resources and long hours spent cooking on inefficient traditional stoves.
Improved cookstoves (ICS) offer a practical solution but only when they're designed with communities, not just for them.
Adoption Is the Real Success Metric
LAYA understood this long before carbon finance entered the picture. Having worked alongside Adivasi communities in the Eastern Ghats for over 40 years, the organisation introduced improved cookstoves only after identifying them as the most practical decentralised energy solution and demonstrating their value within communities. Carbon finance came later, helping scale a solution people had already embraced.
The SARALA cookstove reflects this community-first approach. Built using locally available materials, it reduces fuelwood demand by 25–30%, accommodates existing cooking practices, and is constructed and maintained by trained local youth, creating employment while ensuring long-term ownership within the community.
More Than an Emissions Reduction Project
The impact extends far beyond carbon reductions.
- Reduced fuelwood consumption and lower pressure on surrounding forests.
- Cleaner indoor air for thousands of households.
- Less time spent collecting fuelwood and cooking, allowing families to focus on livelihoods and education.
- Skilled local employment through community-based stove construction and monitoring.
These outcomes are independently monitored and verified, creating high-quality carbon credits backed by measurable environmental and social impact.
Why Carbon Finance Matters
Carbon finance is more than a funding mechanism, it keeps programmes like LAYA's running.
Revenue from verified carbon credits supports regular household monitoring, stove maintenance, community engagement, and independent verification. Rather than funding a one-time intervention, carbon finance helps ensure the programme continues delivering benefits year after year, at no additional cost to participating households.
Building Integrity Into Carbon Markets
As buyers increasingly seek high-integrity carbon credits, projects like LAYA's demonstrate what meaningful climate finance can achieve. More than 4,600 households now benefit from cleaner cooking, over 52,000 tCO₂e have been independently verified across the project's lifetime, and the programme continues to generate measurable climate and community outcomes.
At Ploxi, we're proud to support Laya Green Ventures LGV Pvt. Ltd. as a carbon development facilitator and transaction partner. We currently have verified cookstove carbon credits available for buyers seeking projects backed by robust monitoring, transparent verification, and decades of community trust.
If you're looking to source high-integrity carbon credits with measurable environmental and social impact, we'd be delighted to start the conversation.
