CBAM cost estimator (EU Carbon Border Adjustment)

Yearly CBAM cost for India-origin exports, 2026 to 2034, on EU default values or on the exporter's verified intensity, net of the benchmark share still allocated free.

Standard
Regulation (EU) 2023/956; IR (EU) 2025/2620 (free-allocation adjustment) and 2025/2621 (default values)↗ read it

CBAM cost per year

Under review
cost(y) = volume × max(0, intensity − (1 − payable(y)) × CSCF × benchmark) × EU price

The importer pays for embedded emissions above the free allocation an EU producer would still get. "1 − payable share" is the CBAM factor; it shrinks to zero by 2034.

Intensity on EU default values

Under review
intensity = India default × (1 + mark-up(y))

Without verified data the EU default value applies, with a mark-up that rises by year (fertilisers carry a flat mark-up).

Verified intensity and saving

Under review
cost_verified(y) = volume × max(0, verified − (1 − payable(y)) × CSCF × benchmark_route) × price; saving = Σ (cost_default − cost_verified)

With a verified figure the declared production route's benchmark applies, and the tool shows what verification saves over the years.

Assumptions

  • The tool covers these sectors and CN codes: steel (CN 7208), cement clinker, unwrought aluminium, urea, hydrogen; electricity needs verified data.
  • Coverage per sector (direct only / direct + indirect) is shown as text; the default values are taken as already reflecting it.
  • Defaults use the India default route's benchmark (first route listed per sector).

How to read this page. “Your data” is what you enter or what your organisation has recorded. “Factor table” values come from official publications, each with its source; a “pending review” mark means the figure is still being checked against that source. “Ploxi assumption” is a figure we chose where the standard leaves the choice open.
